Compression-After-Impact Behavior of Carbon Fibre Composites (NRC)

image
At the National Research Council of Canada, I investigated the compression-after-impact (CAI) behavior of carbon fibre–reinforced composites — a key question for damage tolerance in aerospace structures, where barely visible impact damage can significantly reduce load-carrying capacity.
  • Parametric study: Examined how laminate ratios and configurations, impact size and force, and panel thickness affect CAI behavior, supporting the development of high-fidelity residual strength models.
  • Data analysis and figures: Analyzed test data and created all figures for the study.
  • Publication: Presented findings and wrote the discussion and conclusion sections of a published 60-page report characterizing buckling responses of carbon fibre panels after CAI.
The results enhance understanding of post-impact structural behavior and can be used to develop residual strength models for damage-tolerant aerospace design. This work was conducted under a valid security clearance.
