Alex Zhang

Mechanical Engineering Student
Alex is a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Toronto (Class of 2029) with a focus on aerospace structures and composite materials. He is currently a Materials and Process Engineering intern at Bell Textron, conducting composite material fatigue research and production optimization. Previously, he researched compression-after-impact behavior of carbon fibre composites at the National Research Council of Canada. Outside the lab, he builds competition aircraft wings with the University of Toronto Aerospace Team and is a starting player on U of T's varsity tennis team, which won OUA provincial gold.

Aerospace Research Intern
  • Investigated compression-after-impact (CAI) behavior of carbon fibre–reinforced composites, examining how laminate ratios and configurations, impact size and force, and panel thickness affect residual strength.
  • Analyzed data, created all figures, presented findings, and wrote the discussion and conclusion sections of a published 60-page report on characterizing buckling responses of carbon fibre after CAI.

UAS Aerodynamics Member
  • Collaborated with 7 team members to optimize aerodynamics and manufacture the wings of U of T's plane for the SAE Aero Design Competition.
  • Designed lighter, more manufacturable motor and servo mounting hardware, improving the plane's efficiency.
  • Used OpenVSP to evaluate aerodynamic trade-offs across wing shapes, with findings contributing to the team's decision to adopt a new box-wing design.
